The name 3can comes from an ongoing joke between the company's founders while attending a tradeshow in California. Each morning, Brian would go for a run along the beach to watch the sunrise. One morning, he came back to the hotel with a story about some birds he saw walking in the surf. When asked what they were, he said they looked like Toucans; brightly colored with long bill. The others laughed and informed him that there were no Toucans there. He insisted that he saw them, and took the others out the next morning to see for themselves.
When they reached the beach the next morning, armed with cameras, (and some doubt) the only birds they saw were Seagulls. Everyone had a laugh, and told him again, that there were no Toucans on the coast in Long Beach. He replied, Well they're some kind of Toucan, maybe a ThreeCan.
Later that weekend, while brainstorming names for the next business venture, we settled on 3Can in honor of the mysterious and elusive birds he saw one morning on the coast of California.
